“You can tell a lot about a woman’s mood just by her hands. For instance, if they are holding a gun, she’s probably angry.” – Unknown

So I was hanging out, just taking it easy. No sweat. Life is good. Then it hit me like a plot out of a Stephen King novel. A question.

Why does a bicycle stay upright when in motion but fall over when idle? What laws of physics apply?

bike rider

There must be a mathematical equation that explains this phenomenon.

My buddy Lynn is a mathematician. I gave him a call.

Lynn, what is the equation of motion on a bicycle that allows one to ride it?

Aha…………..Aha…………..Ok………….Thought so……………Hmmm……..No kidding……Are you sure…………….no need to get nasty…………………does she really………….wow……….you just had to go there…………………. Ya I agree.

Ok, let me see how this works:

O = lean angle of the rear assembly

V = the steer angle of the front assembly relative to the rear assembly

M = the angle of the dangle

K = kinetic force of the riders grip

C = front sprocket relative to the mass of the rear sprocket

U = plus 84 squared if a universal joint (weed) is involved

B = bovine mass

S = bovine waste

You know Lynn……….I think that’s it. You nailed it buddy.

    Honestly, I had not totally figured this out until I saw your picture illustration. It then dawned on me to consult with Professor Irwin Corey. I called the good professor and related to him the question regarding this kind of motion. He stated to me that is the principle of pedaliatrics which sets the chain in motion creating a circular embodiment spoken by the wheel. This is inversely proportional to gender bias, which was the triggering device for the discovery. Which is in complete alignment of your equation, provided the opiate of the mass is constant. Thank you for clearing this up and I shall rest easier with this knowledge.

    I had a hard time getting past the first quote I was laughing so hard! Your equation is so far over my head…but an excellent answer. Great article:)

      Love your pic Vickie but would prefer to see your entire face. Just sayin. Yes, the equation. A careful examination of its components will reveal the strength of our commitment to the truth.
